Latest league results and updates

From: Gerry Smith, Chairman of the LCU Junior committee

To: Junior league players and their parents

Date: February 12th, 2012

Dear Players

1. Next Junior chess tournament

Our next Junior tournament is scheduled for February 26th – see the calendar page for details. I would encourage everyone to consider playing in these junior tournament events for individuals, as they are simply good fun and very competitive.

2. LCU coaching programme

Please note that the LCU will shortly directly contact players who are selected for coaching this year. The coaching day will be held on March 24th, at St Catherines NS , Inchicore, Dublin. Players involved will be contacted directly and a lisrt of players shown on the website. This coaching is arranged and provided at no cost to players or their families by the LCU.

3. Junior Leagues update

Congratulations to all the players who participated in the Leinster Junior leagues held today in Blanchardstown today [February 12th].

I would like to welcome particularly the new teams that started play in the leagues today: Ninja Warriors, St Catherines and Lanesboro and Clogh NS. We do hope that new teams will enter the leagues and play with us in March and April league date [see below]. We will continue to encourage new teams to enter the leagues and I would welcome if you could let people know about the new Junior leagues.

a. February 12th league matches

5 rounds of play were played with teams separated into Advanced, Intermediate and Junior sections. The results are available on this website [see League Results]. There you can see the current league position of your team at this point.

Please view these results as provisional. Over time some teams may be moved between sections and we always seek the advice of Rory Delaney our Junior Tournament Director on this ahead of a next league date. This is to ensure competitive opposition for everyone.

b. Next league matches

The Junior leagues will be scored over 15 rounds of chess this year, with the results of the league Formation Day [i.e. the first set of November 2011 league matches] taken into account appropriately. Final league positions will use a scoring system that will include an element that rewards teams for participating [as well as winning or losing games or matches]. Further information will be available from Rory Delaney [our Junior Tournament Director] on this website before the last league rounds in April.

Note that the next two rounds of league matches are scheduled for :

March 11th, Sunday 2.30pm
April 15th, Sunday 2pm

On April 15th, we have our final 5 rounds of play and prize ceremony. We hope to have the Chairman of the Leinster Chess Union, Mr Charlie Talbot, available to present the prizes to our teams.

Playing venues for these dates are being finalised now. Please check www.leinsterjuniorchess.com/calendar.htm [an update is due shortly].

Finally…..

Our real goal at all times is that the players enjoy their chess and find friendships in the chess world. I am grateful to you as platers, and your parents and club officials, for the fantastic help and courtesy we received in running the chess events!

I congratulate all of you on a fine display of chess playing, with only 15 minutes per game. I look forward to seeing you all on March 11th!

Best wishes in chess,

Gerry Smith

Saturday/Sunday Junior league

From: Gerry Smith, Chairman of LCU Junior Committee

Date: 1st October, 2011

Dear Volunteer/Coach, Club Secretary

I write to draw your attention to the introduction of a new Saturday/Sunday afternoon junior chess league this winter. These new Junior Chess Leagues are being organised and run by the Leinster Chess Union.

As chairman of the LCU Junior Committee, I would like to invite you to consider entering a team or teams to the leagues. Teams consist of 4 players and any grouping of children can form a team. Our whole focus, assisted by experienced chess coaches, will be on ensuring a good time is had by all the participants.

Full details are available on the website www.leinsterjuniorchess.com .

One point I would stress is that these leagues are designed to be very suitable for all ages from 7 years plus - and will cater for all playing strengths. Beginners are very welcome indeed.

Steps to take to enter a team

Having identified your 4 team members you will simply need to find an adult willing to act as team captain for them. Typically a parent/guardian of one of the players fulfils this role.

You should then:

  • · Complete the Team Entry form (Word or RTF)
  • · Complete Individual Player Registration forms for each player (Word or RTF)

and send these to Mr Gerry Smith, 44 Thornleigh, Kilbush Lane, Rush, Co.Dublin.

Contact numbers for any queries are: 01-8068136(work) 01-8437779 (home) 086 0847587.

If you prefer you can complete the forms electronically and email them Gerry.SMITH@gapac.com , copying to jdelaney@oceanfree.net.

A small registration cost [€5 per player for the season] applies but there is no team entry cost. Any payments due are made on the day of the chess events directly by the players/guardians.

Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the junior committee and we will be pleased to help. Remember that full details are on www.leinsterjuniorchess.com !

Best wishes in chess!

Gerry Smith

Chairman LCU Junior Committee.

Leinster Junior Chess is the junior part of the Leinster Chess Union.

Leinster Junior chess will run a calendar of junior events in the season 2011/12. Our events comprise a Saturday/Sunday afternoon junior chess league and individual tournaments. Events are normally organised in a single venue, close to participating clubs. Typically games start at 2.30pm and finish at 5.30pm.
